World War One was fought between 1914 and 1920, and young DeWitt Wallace from St. Paul, Minnesota fought valiantly and was hospitalized in France with severe wounds. He spent his hospital time reading magazines, and after returning to America to continue his healing, he continued to read magazine articles at the local library. He decided that the long and often complicated articles might be condensed with simple language that anyone could read and enjoy in a few minutes.
He and his wife self-published the first magazine in February 1922 with thirty short articles that could be read one a day if desired. The magazine soon became one of the most read magazines world wide. In 1955 and 1956 they produced a thirty minute anthology television show with stories from the magazine, airing thirty-nine episodes in all.
