Four Star Playhouse - 1952-1956

Four Star Playhouse

Four movie stars got together and formed a company to produce a weekly half hour television show in the early 1950's. They were Charles Boyer, Dick Powell, David Niven and Joan Fontaine. That group didn't last long, and Rosalind Russell, Joel McCrea, Frank Lovejoy and Ida Lupino each joined for a time to complete the foursome. Each week one of the stars would be featured in a show which could be a serious murder thriller, a light comedy or anything in between. The show originally aired on CBS Thursday evenings from 8:30-9:00pm Eastern time, and later moved to the 9:30-10:00pm time slot. During the second season, before Ida Lupino joined the company, Frank Lovejoy was the fourth member, but after his popular February 25th episode named "Meet McGraw," his character split off into its own show - one of the first 'spin-offs' of young television.
