The Garry Moore Variety Show
He was born Thomas Garrison Morfit III, and after dropping out of high school he got work as a radio announcer. He used his birth name until 1940 when working for Baltimore, Maryland radio station as part of the cast of an afternoon show hosted by Ransom Sherman. Sherman thought that his name was too difficult to remember and held a contest to choose a better name for Morfit, and the winning entry was 'Garry Moore,' which became his on-air name from that day forward. In 1950 the CBS radio network gave him a Monday through Friday talk/variety show that was broadcast until the spring of 1958 when Moore gave it up because he was too busy with other work. But that fall he agreed to host an hour long evening show featuring chat, comedy skits, special appearances and singing. One of the regular features was a segment of 'candid camera' episodes with Alan Funt that was split off into its own show in 1960. The Garry Moore Show also helped to launch the careers of Alan King, Carol Burnett and Jonathan Winters. Writers for the show included Neil Simon and Woody Allen
